Is the £50 Referral Worth It for Your Tariff Quote?

Use a printable, browser-based checklist to compare an Octopus Energy tariff quote before switching through a referral or another route.

Direct answer

A £50 referral credit can be helpful, but it does not prove that a tariff is right for your household. Compare the complete quote: annual estimate, unit rates, standing charges, tariff type, payment method, contract terms, exit fees, smart-meter or equipment requirements, and how your household actually uses energy.

This checklist is educational and does not provide a personal energy recommendation.

Start with your own annual consumption

A quote is only meaningful when the usage assumption is close to your household’s actual gas and electricity use. Use a recent bill, annual statement or supplier estimate as a starting point, then check what the Octopus quote assumes.

A lower unit rate does not automatically mean a lower bill if the standing charge, usage assumption or price structure differs. Equally, a welcome credit is a one-off amount while energy charges continue over time. Keep those elements separate when comparing options.

Use the current official information and your own quote before you make a switch.

Record these quote fields

Use the printable checklist on the tools page to capture the important fields from the live quote before submitting an application.

  • Electricity and gas unit rates, plus daily standing charges.
  • Tariff type: fixed, flexible, Tracker, Agile, EV, export, solar, battery or heat-pump related.
  • Payment method, contract length, notice conditions and exit fees where shown.
  • Estimated annual cost and the consumption assumed by the quote.
  • Smart-meter, half-hourly-reading, vehicle, charger, solar, battery or heat-pump requirements.

Check the whole-household trade-off

For a time-of-use or technology-specific tariff, compare more than the headline cheap period. Ask what applies to electricity outside the advertised window and whether your household can genuinely shift enough use to make the structure sensible.

Dynamic and wholesale-linked tariffs can rise as well as fall. A smart tariff may need a compatible meter and account connection. A household that cannot change when it uses energy may reach a different conclusion from one with an EV, battery, solar panels or a heat pump.

Make the referral decision last

Once you are comfortable with the current quote, check the direct referral route if you want to use it. Confirm the offer appears before applying and remember that eligibility and credit timing remain subject to the current terms.
